It is important to enable Find my iPhone, especially on iOS 7 and newer.
Find my iPhone gives you the ability to locate your device, remotely display a message on it, or wipe it. With iOS 7 and newer, it also provides Activation Lock, which prevents any one from using it (making it less attractive to thieves).
